Have you ever wondered why dogs and cats shed so much fur? Many pet owners struggle with this question but rarely find clear answers.
In Kenya, more people are embracing the joy of not just owning pets but truly caring for them. Today, pet owners are willing to spend extra to ensure their furry friends feel like part of the family. In my work at Everland Pets, I frequently get asked about excessive fur shedding. While I may not be a veterinary expert, I am a passionate pet lover and always eager to learn. So, I consulted a veterinary doctor to understand why pets shed fur and how to manage it.
Why Do Pets Shed Fur?
For pet owners, shedding can be frustrating—no one wants to step out covered in fur! However, shedding is a natural process for dogs and cats, much like how humans lose hair when they brush or comb it. The real question is: When is shedding too much?
How to Prevent Excessive Shedding
The veterinarian explained that the most crucial factor in controlling excessive shedding is diet. Many people don’t realize that dogs and cats primarily need meat in their diet. Here are some key dietary tips:
- Dogs should have a diet rich in meat, along with beef bones for added nutrition.
- Cats should be given chicken bones and meat.
- Milk can be offered occasionally, but fresh water should always be available.
Other Causes of Excessive Fur Loss
Apart from diet, another major cause of excessive shedding is fleas and mites. These pests irritate the skin, leading to more fur loss than normal. To prevent this:
- Use a FLEA COLLAR to keep parasites away for at least 8 months.
- One can also buy SPOT ON treatment from your local agrovet shop.
Additionally, while cats self-clean by licking themselves, they still need occasional baths like once a month to keep their fur healthy. Dogs, too, could be bathed at least once a month to maintain their coat and overall hygiene.

Owning a pet is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with responsibilities—including proper care. While pet care can sometimes be costly, it’s essential to ensure your furry friend is happy and healthy.
